Watercolour Landscape paintingDrawing and painting in a breathtaking rural setting

Residential art courses from Draw and Paint Online are an enjoyable way to learn how to draw and paint or improve your artistic skills.

Draw and Paint Online’s residential art courses are open to all students on the leisure art courses and City & Guilds art courses.

Set in the heart of the Pennines, the residential art courses are an ideal opportunity for you to meet with fellow artists.  Swapping ideas and sharing experiences, can be a valuable way to develop your personal approach to your work and consolidate your learning experience.

Residential art course content

When possible, students will be encouraged to work outside, taking inspiration from one of the most dramatic and beautiful areas of the UK.  However, during inclement weather, there will be the facility to work indoors in the studio.

There will be the opportunity to extend your artistic skills with the option of working with a variety of materials including water colours.

Although the area lends itself to landscape drawing and painting, there will also be the opportunity for drawing, still life and figure work.

In fact, the residential art courses are perfect for stretching your abilities as an artist.

Residential art course in a rural Pennines setting

Learn to paint and draw in the beautiful setting of Colden.  This small hamlet, set in the heart of the Pennines in the Calder Valley region is an idyllic location for residential art courses.

Located at the edge of the Colden Valley nature reserve on the Pennine Way, Colden is about 2 miles from the picturesque village of Heptonstall and 3 miles from the historical textile town of Hebden Bridge.

Accommodation

River Dean House offers purpose-built accommodation for visitors to the area.  Its extensive gardens and beautiful setting provide inspiration and an abundance of places to draw and paint.

Sited next to the River Colden, the complex also has a 2-bedroom cottage available, meaning that non-painting friends and family are welcome to join you on your retreat.

Plenty to do and see

Colden

Colden offers visitors a wealth of activities including, walking, cycling and riding.

The local pub, which brews its own beer, offers a tempting menu of traditional pub food.  Full of character, the pub often holds exhibitions of local artists.

Up the road is the Sportsman’s Arms, which is also the Kebs Arts Centre, where art classes and exhibitions are regularly held.  With free music on a Saturday night, spontaneous folk and Irish music on Monday evenings and a fun quiz every Thursday night, there is plenty to keep visitors entertained.

Very near to the Sportsman's Arms are some rocks known as the Bride Stones which are used for climbing.

Near Widdop is another popular pub, the Pack Horse Inn, which is very well known for serving delicious traditional roast dinners.

Heptonstall

Heptonstall is a renowned cobbled textile village; full of history and virtually untouched since the 19 Century.

There are two pubs in the Village and on Tuesday evenings there is folk music in the White Lion.

Sylvia Plath, the famous American poet who was married to Ted Hughes, is buried in the local church yard.

Hebden Bridge

Well known for its independent shops, cinema and restaurants, Hebden Bridge offers canal boat cruises, shopping and has a certain quirky appeal for visitors.

Haworth

Haworth, the quaint village which was home to the Bronte Sisters is easily accessible by car or public transport.

Transport

A regular, reliable bus service operates from Hebden Bridge railway station, linking all venues.  For convenience, it runs until midnight.
